Ways To Deal Damage

Direct Hits: Hit your opponent when they are not blocking to deal damage directly.
Grabs: Use a grab move to bypass your opponent's block and inflict damage.
Chip Damage: When your opponent blocks your attack, some moves can still cause a small amount of damage.

None of these methods is always the best choice. Players who are too predictable with their attacks can be countered easily. It's important to watch how your opponent defends themselves. Some might block often, while others might counterattack. Knowing their habits lets you decide when to use grabs (since grabs can beat blocks) or other attacks.

Basic Tactics

In the game, your primary decision often boils down to "to grab or not to grab." There aren't many complicated maneuvers like in some other games—just simple choices that have big impacts. When your opponent is getting up from being knocked down, they have to guess whether you'll grab or use another attack. If they guess wrong, they're at a disadvantage, which you can exploit.

Managing Advantage

To keep up your offense effectively, try to stay at a "frame advantage." This means your actions are slightly quicker than your opponent’s, so you can continue attacking safely. Pushing opponents towards the walls of the arena can be very strategic because it limits their movement and makes them more likely to make mistakes under pressure, such as throwing out attacks that you can then punish.

Dealing With Blocking Opponents

If your opponent blocks a lot, you have two main ways to handle it:

Chip Damage: Some attacks cause small amounts of damage through an opponent’s block, useful for characters that specialize in long-range attacks or projectiles.
Shield Breaks: This is another way to deal damage by breaking the opponent’s block entirely. In certain game phases, breaking a shield can lead to significant advantages and even opportunities for combos. Some characters and support characters specialize in breaking shields effectively.

By understanding and using these methods, you can adapt your strategy based on how your opponent plays, which is key to winning in the game.
