Ways To Block or Attack

In Pokkén and other 3D fighting games, one of the best ways to defend yourself isn't just blocking or attacking—it's using smart movement to avoid tricky situations entirely. Instead of trying to guess your opponent's next move up close, it's often better to position yourself so you don't have to face the mixup in the first place. Effective strategies include walking backwards, backdashing, or jumping to keep a safe distance. Here are a few tactics to help if you find yourself close to your opponent:

  1. Homing Cancel: This is a move where you start an attack (by pressing X) but then quickly block (by pressing R) before your attack actually hits. This can cancel some incoming attacks, especially those that are slower to start. It can also switch quickly from an attack to a block, which is useful if your opponent tries to counter your moves unexpectedly.

  2. Perfect Block: This technique builds on the homing cancel. After moving into a block from an attack stance, your character will be locked in a blocking animation for a set period. This consistent timing can help you recover quickly from blocking and take action, potentially giving you an advantage even when blocking normally strong attacks.

  3. Delay Tech: This is a personal strategy where you initially block when getting up from being knocked down and then quickly change to an aggressive move like a dive kick. This helps protect you from immediate hits and counters opponents who wait to see you block before they make their move.

  4. Backdashing: This move gives you a brief moment of invincibility as you dash backward, allowing you to escape certain direct attacks and even some grabs. It's a good way to avoid attacks that don't last long or are timed to hit you right as you get up.

These techniques—homing canceling, perfect blocking, delay teching, and backdashing—are all about avoiding damage without relying solely on blocking. While blocking is effective and limits damage mostly to grabs, it's not foolproof since grabs in Pokkén can still cause significant damage. That’s why mastering movement and these defensive tactics can provide better protection and strategic advantages in fights. Remember, moving smartly to avoid attacks often trumps other defensive actions.
